Curupira is the official mascot of COP30
The legendary figure of Brazilian folklore is known as a forest guardian
Curupira, an iconic character from Brazilian legends, has been chosen as the main symbol for the visual identity of COP30, the United Nations Climate Change Conference. The city of Belém, in the state of Pará, will host COP30 from November 10 to 21.
Curupira is much more than a mythical figure. He is recognized as the guardian of the forests and animals, a fantastic and magical entity, and a firm defender of the jungle. His name has deep roots in local culture, coming from Tupi-Guarani, where "curumim" means child and "pira" means body.
The president of COP30, André Corrêa do Lago, has sent a letter to the international community, stating that forests will be a "central theme" in the debates of the planet's largest environmental forum. Corrêa do Lago goes further, incorporating the ancestral knowledge of indigenous peoples into the climate change mitigation strategy. (Source: official COP30 website)
